International Volunteer Awards to Open Early

International Volunteer Awards to Open Early

The nomination period for International Volunteer Awards is changing this year here at AFS-USA. That means that the Galatti Award and the Art and Peggy Howe Award will have an earlier nomination period: May 15 – June 30, 2019.

Galatti Award

The Galatti Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service honors AFS Volunteers whose commitment and dedication to the organization have advanced the mission and goals of AFS. Stephen Galatti served as the Director General of AFS for more than 28 years, and he built and transformed AFS from a volunteer ambulance service into a worldwide organization that promotes peace and global awareness through intercultural learning experiences. This award is an opportunity to honor volunteers who are long-time AFS role models and inspire other generations to volunteer.

A nomination will require a description of the nominee’s journey/career and how it was shaped by the AFS values, a description of the nominee’s achievements and contributions to advance the mission and goals of AFS, and a description of the nominee’s impact on the AFS community as a whole.

Peggy and Art Howe Award

Families are at the heart of AFS. We often see multiple members of a family actively volunteering with AFS-USA and sharing the #AFSeffect. With this award, we want to honor our families of volunteers while remembering Peggy and Art Howe, an exceptional couple who remarkably advanced the mission and goals of AFS, both within the organization and in society at large.

Art Howe began as an ambulance driver and later served as AFS President and a Life Trustee. Peggy Howe served as a local chapter volunteer and as the volunteer coordinator at the AFS headquarters. Art and Peggy collaborated and supported each other in their effort to foster diversity and inclusion.

Though there are many examples of ways that the Howes supported diversity and inclusion, there are many different ways of interpreting diversity and inclusion. Tell us about how your favorite family of AFS Volunteers promotes diversity, inclusion, and the AFS mission. A nomination will require a description of the nominees’ promotion of diversity and inclusion and ways that the nominees collaborate and support each other in their AFS volunteerism.

The nomination period for both awards will be May 15 – June 30, 2019, and nomination instructions will be available then. More information is available on MyAFS Help & Learning here.
