As we approach the upcoming academic year, we want to first express our deepest gratitude for your unwavering dedication and hard work. AFS-USA has faced challenging hosting seasons over the past several years, even before the impact of COVID. Each year, we have communicated the critical importance of the August 31 deadline, mandated by the U.S. Department of State, for placing students with host families. Unfortunately, this deadline has not been met for several years.
Last year, a significant number of students were not placed and, consequently, could not participate in the program. This led us to reduce our hosting goal for the 2024-25 academic year. Despite this adjustment, our current placement numbers are significantly behind last year’s, placing us in a precarious position.
In light of this reality, we must ask, even implore, all volunteers to consider opening their homes to welcome a student, even if it is a temporary welcome placement. This is crucial to ensure that each student has a plan for participation and school placement.
This year is critically different. After multiple years of not meeting the regulatory placement deadline, the U.S. Department of State has been unequivocally clear about their expectation that we meet this deadline. The ramifications of not securing placements for every student with a DS-2019 visa invitation are expected to be significant and could impact our status – our future – as an approved organization.
We recognize and deeply appreciate the tremendous efforts of our volunteers and staff in securing placements. Your dedication is invaluable, and we are incredibly grateful for your ongoing support.
Together, we can overcome this challenge and continue to provide life-changing experiences for students around the world. Thank you for your tireless commitment and for making a difference in the lives of so many.
