A Tribute to Barbara Hart, AFS-USA Volunteer

Barbara Hart’s boundless dedication and unwavering commitment to AFS-USA leaves an indelible mark on all of us who had the privilege of knowing her. Her passion for fostering cultural exchange and understanding was not only evident but infectious, touching the lives of countless individuals across the Modesto area and beyond.

As a beacon of enthusiasm and advocacy, Barbara embodied the spirit of volunteerism, tirelessly championing the transformative power of hosting AFS exchange students. Through her tireless efforts, she not only opened hearts and homes but also broadened horizons, inspiring others to embrace the richness of intercultural experiences.

I first met Barbara in person in her kitchen, which was a bustling hub of community engagement – judging from the constant trail of visitors and the frequent ringing of the phone. The level of involvement with so many people served as a testament to her boundless energy and unwavering dedication. For AFS, whether fundraising for local teens to embark on life-changing study abroad programs or warmly welcoming prospective host families, Barbara’s presence was a source of strength and inspiration to all of us.

In her selfless service and enduring legacy, Barbara leaves behind a profound legacy of kindness, generosity, compassionate grit, and community spirit. May her memory continue to inspire us to embody the values she held dear and to foster a world of empathy, understanding, connection, and, perhaps above all, service to peace and to each other.

With my deepest sympathy, gratitude, and respect,
