AFS-USA Policy Guidance: Navigating Election Season and Public Safety

As we enter the final days leading up to the U.S. election, political enthusiasm and public activity are visible across the country. AFS-USA takes pride in fostering global understanding, but ensuring student welfare is always our primary responsibility.

Because this guidance may be new to some members of our AFS community, here is how each group can work together to keep our students safe while maintaining a supportive environment:

For AFS Students

  • Do Not Attend Rallies or Protests
While it may feel exciting to witness history in person, AFS-USA policy strongly advises against participating in or attending political rallies, marches, or demonstrations. In unfamiliar environments, crowds can become unsafe very quickly.
  • Exercise Discretion Online
Think twice before posting strong political opinions or protest footage on social channels. Once posted, you lose control over where your image and words travel.
  • Observe and Learn
Ask questions within your host family and school community to understand different viewpoints, but remember you are here as an international cultural ambassador.

For Host Families

  • Help Set Boundaries
Please discuss this policy with your student and help them plan alternatives if public events are occurring in your area.
  • Foster Safe Dialogue at Home
Politics can be deeply personal. Creating a neutral space where your student can ask questions without feeling pressured to take a side is invaluable.

For Volunteers

  • Monitor Local Conditions
Keep communication lines open with your assigned students and host families, particularly in areas where large civic demonstrations or disruptions are scheduled.
  • Reach Out for Support
If a student faces friction at school or in their community regarding political topics, please inform your AFS-USA Participant Support & Learning Specialist (national staff member).

As always, thank you for your collective dedication to ensuring that all AFS students have a meaningful, safe, and enriching experience.
