Please read below for a brief overview of this important document.

WHY: The media can be a powerful way to publicize our impact, but it also carries the risk of AFS-USA being portrayed inaccurately or unfavorably. To maximize each media opportunity while safeguarding the organization’s reputation and, when necessary, the privacy of our participants, it is essential to follow the procedures in this document. This is especially critical when addressing sensitive or potentially controversial stories, where quick and careful action is required.

Note: Only selected staff can serve as official spokespersons for AFS-USA; if you are contacted by the media about a sensitive or controversial topic, forward the inquiry immediately to Melvin Harmon (mharmon@afsusa.org) and Candace O’Malley (comalley@afsusa.org). If you are contacted by phone or in-person, simply state, “I am not an official spokesperson for AFS-USA” and offer to forward the inquiry to someone who is.

WHAT: The Media Policy is both a regulatory document and a how-to guide for interacting with the media on matters related to AFS-USA and our work. It includes:

  • Instructions for responding to media inquiries, both routine and controversial; national and local
  • Tips for proactively engaging local media
  • Rules for using media to recruit host families
  • Information on preparing for interviews
  • General tips and resources, including press release templates

WHO: All AFS-USA Volunteers and Staff should review and adhere to the Media Policy.

WHEN: AFS-USA Volunteers and Staff should always consult the Media Policy:

  • In advance of contacting the media
  • Immediately after receiving media inquiries
