A student says something during a check-in that gives you pause. A host parent calls frustrated. You sense that something is not quite right, but you’re not sure what to ask next.

Every exchange experience comes with moments when a student, host family, or volunteer needs someone to listen, notice what is happening beneath the surface, and know how to respond.
Join fellow Liaisons, Support Coordinators, Associate Support Coordinators, and Area Team Chairs for an interactive session built around the real situations volunteers encounter. Through role-play demonstrations, observation, and discussion, you’ll practice:
- Noticing the cues and clues that something may need more attention
- Asking questions that open the conversation
- Supporting without stepping in to solve everything
- Knowing when and how to involve others
- Learning from how fellow volunteers approach the same situation
We’ll help shape the session around situations YOU want to feel prepared for. When you register, you’ll have an opportunity to answer this question – what is one situation you’ve encountered, or worry you might encounter, where you wish you knew exactly what to say or do?
