Dear AFS-USA Volunteers,
It is with mixed emotions that I share the news that Mary Jo Brock will be retiring on September 14, 2026. I know firsthand that this was a decision Mary Jo gave a great deal of thought to, and I deeply appreciate the care and collaboration she has brought to shaping a seamless transition plan.
Mary Jo joined AFS-USA on May 12, 2003, embarking on an extraordinary career spanning more than two decades. Over her 23 years of distinction, she has served in a wide range of pivotal roles – from Regional Field Coordinator and Director of Organizational Development to Chief Officer of Field Operations, and ultimately as Vice President of Host Family Experience and Stakeholder Engagement.
Throughout her career, Mary Jo brought a uniquely holistic and personal perspective to her leadership. She hasn’t just worked for the AFS mission – she has lived it. As a dedicated volunteer, a sending parent, and a host parent who welcomed students from around the world (including Hong Kong and Finland) into her home multiple times, her insight has been priceless.
Mary Jo’s profound commitment to elevating the experience for host families, natural parents, and volunteers has left an indelible mark on our organization. Through her coaching, mentorship, guidance, and unwavering support of the 52 staff members who have reported directly to her throughout her tenure with AFS, she has also made a lasting and meaningful impact on generations of leaders within the organization. Her professional expertise, passion for excellence, and collaborative spirit have strengthened the very fabric of the AFS-USA network. Her integrity and dedication are admired not only by her colleagues and our Board of Directors, but by the thousands of volunteers nationwide whose lives she has touched.
On behalf of our entire staff and volunteer community, I want to express my deepest gratitude, admiration, and heartiest congratulations to Mary Jo for over 20 years of transformative service to AFS and to our mission of building a more just and peaceful world.
Thank you, Mary Jo. You will be dearly missed, but your legacy will continue to inspire AFS-USA for years to come.
