Highlights of the AFS-USA Staff Gathering in Nashville

AFS-USA staff from across the country recently gathered in Nashville, Tennessee for a 4-day meeting to collaborate, share ideas, and set goals for the year ahead. We’re so grateful to all of you—our volunteers—whose support helps make moments like this possible. Because of your understanding, staff were able to focus fully on planning ways to make our programs even stronger.

A highlight of the week was hearing from Dr. Robert Hoffman, an AFS-USA alumnus who studied abroad in Argentina. He shared how his exchange experience shaped his life and career—a powerful reminder of the lasting impact of intercultural exchange, which wouldn’t be possible without volunteers like you.

We also took time to celebrate milestones and retirements. Paula McGrath, Director of Travel Operations, a foundational and integral part of AFS Travel Operations (AFS-USA, AFS Travel) for nearly 45 years, will be retiring and was honored for her remarkable dedication. Additionally, Robin Weber, Senior Director of Risk Management, Compliance, and Quality Assurance, will be retiring after 30 years of extraordinary service to AFS-USA and the AFS network.

During the gathering, staff strengthened partnerships, explored innovative strategies, and renewed their commitment to empowering global citizens. The energy, passion, and purpose felt in Nashville will continue to guide our work as we connect cultures and transform lives together with our incredible global AFS community.
