Influential Black Americans Who Lived Abroad

Influential Black Americans Who Lived Abroad

In honor of Black History Month, our newest blog post highlights influential black Americans, such as James Baldwin, Alice Walker, Maya Angelou, and Henry Louis Gates, Jr., whose experiences living, teaching, and studying abroad informed their perspectives, lives, and careers.

AFS-USA is committed to making our organization and programs accessible and inclusive for people of color. In particular, our Students of Color Exchange group works with students before they depart on program and after they return to offer them support and guidance on how to use their unique background to enrich their experience and fulfill their role as an AFS Ambassador.
