Chinese NSLI-Y Academic Year participants recently met virtually with their peer leaders. Both AFS-USA and AFS-CHN partners facilitated the call. Peer leaders are local students with an interest in study abroad and a desire to share their culture and language. The meeting began with introductions of staff, participants, and peer leaders, followed by an overview of the role of a peer leader as well as the guidelines for their future meetings. Participants were then put in breakout rooms to engage in an icebreaker activity designed to get to know everyone better. The meeting concluded with participants and peer leaders deciding their virtual platform of choice for their meetings and scheduling the next time they would meet. Participants have commented about their leaders that “my peer mentor was very helpful” as well as “My peer leader meeting went really well! We got along super well and he was able to help me correct a lot of my spoken grammar mistakes”.
