March 30 Charter Flight Travel Confirmation for DEN, GER, NED, NOR, SWE, and SUI Hosted Students

March 30 Charter Flight Travel Confirmation for DEN, GER, NED, NOR, SWE, and SUI Hosted Students

Dear AFS students, host families, and volunteers,

We have received confirmation that our international charter flight will be departing on Monday night, March 30th, from Chicago’s O’Hare Airport. This AFS charter flight will include students from Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and Switzerland. The flight departure from Chicago O’Hare is currently scheduled for 9:00PM on Monday night. From there, the AFS group will first travel to Copenhagen and, afterwards, to Frankfurt (subject to change, should conditions warrant).

For those who will be flying to Chicago, today and throughout the weekend AFS Travel staff are working to finalize your domestic travel to Chicago O’Hare. As soon as travel arrangements are confirmed, AFS staff will both email and call host families and students.

Most students will depart for Chicago on Monday morning. For some, it may be necessary to take a red eye flight departing on Sunday night.

The charter organizers have informed us that each passenger will have a baggage allowance which is different from standard international flights.

You will be able to take:

•    One carry on (at a maximum weight of 8kg/17 lbs.)
•    One checked bag (at a maximum weight of 25 kg/55 lbs.)
•    One small personal item such as a purse or small backpack that fits under the seat

Please remember that:

•    The airline won’t allow additional/overweight bags even if you are able to pay for them.
•    There will be no available options for you to ship items home from the airport.
•    Again, there is no option for you to pay for overweight or additional luggage.

We regret these limitations but, unfortunately, they are outside of AFS’ control.

If you have any questions, please contact us at covid19@afsusa.org.

We’re grateful to all AFS students, host families, volunteers, and parents/guardians for your patience during this unprecedented and very challenging situation. We understand the disappointment you are experiencing and we thank you for having taken part in the AFS mission – to help create a more just and peaceful world.

With warm regards,
