Does Your Professional Experience Match Current Needs of the AFS-USA Board of Directors?

Dear AFS Volunteers,

The AFS-USA Board of Directors is working to identify potential new directors for 3-year terms, starting in July 2022, who can provide strategic leadership to help the organization accomplish its priority goals.

AFS-USA Board members provide oversight, insight, and foresight with a focus on strategic issues as they relate to the business environment in which AFS-USA operates. The Board has a fiduciary responsibility to ensure the organization is running in both financial and programmatic compliance. The Board makes decisions and recommendations that are intended to preserve the fiscal stability and health of our organization, provides direction and guidance on organizational priorities, and ensures that the programs and operations of AFS-USA are guided by the AFS mission.

Please take a few minutes to watch this video from Sarah Yancey, current Chair of the Board, to better understand the priorities and role of the AFS-USA Board.

We’re reaching out to the AFS-USA Volunteer network because we know there are current AFS volunteers with both the desired professional experience AND the added value of holding the perspective of an AFS-USA volunteer.

Board members bring an array of professional expertise, such as finance, board governance, organizational management, secondary school education, global education and legal experience. Here are the greatest needs the Board has identified for the current election cycle:

  • National perspective of secondary education issues and trends related to global education (could include researcher/ trade publication leader in international education)
  • Board Governance: Keen understanding of nonprofit risk management and business continuity issues; Knowledge of board meeting processes; Knowledge of legal compliance issues and IRS regulations pertaining to 501(c)3 organizations; Experience in managing Board performance evaluation.

Sound like you? If so, please submit the Board Interest Form by February 15, 2022, for consideration in the current election cycle. Candidates will be contacted about next steps soon after the interest form deadline. Thank you!
