October 8 Update: The article below has been updated to reflect the launch of the YES Abroad and NSLI-Y applications for 2022-23!

The Outbound Sponsored Programs team is happy to announce that the 2022-23 application season has arrived –the CBYX, YES Abroad, and NSLI-Y applications are all open!

Please join us in spreading the news about these programs of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. All programs are merit-based full scholarships for eligible high school students and recent graduates!

The Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX) program provides scholarships for eligible American high school students and recent graduates to spend an academic year of study and cultural immersion in Germany. Scholarship recipients will gain a new perspective on global current affairs and German social, economic, and political life, all while learning the German language through language lessons, day-to-day life in the culture, attending a local high school, and living with a host family. Participants serve as ‘youth ambassadors’ from the United States while participating in educational, cultural, and political events, including receptions and meetings with government officials.

The Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (YES) Abroad program provides scholarships for eligible American high school students and recent graduates to live with host families and attend a local high school for an academic year in countries that may include Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Egypt, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Jordan, North Macedonia, Malaysia, Morocco, the Philippines, Senegal, Thailand, and Turkey. Students promote mutual understanding between the U.S. and the host country by forming lasting relationships with the local community.

The National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) program provides scholarships for eligible American high school students and recent graduates to learn critical languages in summer and academic-year overseas programs. The program focuses on language instruction, while providing participants with cultural experiences in the host community and sparking a lifetime interest in languages and cultures. Summer and academic year programs are available for Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), Hindi, Indonesian, Korean, Persian (Tajiki), Russian, and Turkish.
