The Outbound Sponsored Programs team is happy to announce that the 2022-23 application season has arrived! As of this writing, the CBYX application has opened and the YES Abroad and NSLI-Y applications are expected to open soon!
This is an important update about the YES Abroad and NSLI-Y 2021-22 year-programs.
AFS has been informed that the U.S. Department of State has confirmed that the majority of NSLI-Y summer 2021 programs will be shifted from the in-person to virtual environments, and that candidates were informed of this yesterday evening (March 23) by email. A small number of in-person programs in Taiwan (Mandarin) and South Korea (Korean) may still occur.

In follow-up to our March post about the cancelation of NSLI-Y summer 2020 programs, we’re glad to announce that AFS has been awarded NSLI-Y Virtual Summer Intensive (VSI) participants across all four of our scheduled NSLI-Y languages!
AFS-USA and AFS Germany have been informed that the U.S. Department of State and German Bundestag have decided to shorten the 2020-21 CBYX program for both American and German participants.
As you may already be aware, AFS-USA sending participants (“outbound”) are being returned home. For the American YES Abroad and NSLI-Y students, as well as the American and German CBYX students, this direction came from the U.S. Department of State. Staff at AFS-USA worked closely with AFS partners to arrange for student return travel, where possible and safe, and where participants were fit to travel.
